Power Electronic Based Distribution Transformer - IEEE based Seminar


Abstract
The distribution transformer has been in use by utilities throughout the twentieth century. Until now, it has consisted of a configuration of iron or steel cores and copper/aluminum coils, with mineral oil serving as both coolant and dielectric medium. Inherent in this type of construction are regulation, significant weight, losses, environmental concerns, and power quality issues. For the 21st century, a new kind of distribution
transformer is proposed; one that can be made self-regulating, oil-free, and able to correct power quality problems. A power electronic transformer has been analyzed, simulated, prototyped, and tested. Results of this effort as well as the novel features of this new type of transformer are discussed herein.

The seminar covers the significant features, design considerations and the popular types of optical C.T An overview of the principle of working of an OCT and the different types of current sensing methods.(based upon Faraday Effect) are given. The comparison of conventional C.Ts and optical C.Ts displays the ability of O.C.T to overcome the saturation effect and the problem of electromagnetic interference (EMI). The presentation also covers the field test results of an O.C.T.( such as effect of lightning, ratio error, short circuit current ) and highlights the merits of O.C.Ts over conventional C.Ts including high accuracy, reduced size and weight, safe and explosion free (avoids oil or SF6) ; lack of problems of insulation failure, low

Artificial Nueral Networks (ANN) in Power System Fault Analysis : Seminar

Abstract 
The main objective of this paper is the implementation of an alternative protection model to transmission lines applying Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). An improvement in performance to the conventional distance relay is expected, once the ANNs can learn the different fault conditions as well as network changes in order to operate in less time correctly. In this work, the relay protection zone (96% of a transmission line length) was determined by forward and reverse single-line-to-ground fault condition. The input data shows the trip/no trip decision of a protection system. The approach used in this paper utilizes the voltage and current post-fault samples as input to a moving data window. The implemented neural network should capture the knowledge for the correct relay operation facing the different network conditions
